2022 ELCA Churchwide Assembly action on the Commission for a Renewed Lutheran Church

“…To direct the Church Council to establish a Commission for a Renewed Lutheran Church comprised of leaders of diverse representation from all three expressions that, working in consultation with the Conference of Bishops and the Church Council, shall reconsider the statements of purpose for each of the expressions of this church, the principles of its organizational structure, and all matters pertaining thereunto, being particularly attentive to our shared commitment to dismantle racism, and will present its findings and recommendations to the 2025 Churchwide Assembly in preparation for a possible reconstituting convention to be called under the rules for a special meeting of the Churchwide Assembly.” [CA22.01.06]

Sixth Meeting of the Commission for a Renewed Lutheran Church

The Commission for a Renewed Lutheran Church (CRLC) met via Zoom on June 11-12, 2024. Each meeting opened with conversation, prayer, and holy reflection on our work together.

Day 1

• The All Ears Committee presented initial survey highlights from the CRLC’s winter listening sessions and online survey. They also provided an update on reaching out to individual ethnic ministry groups and listening that will occur at the Youth Gathering & adjacent events.
• The Why and What Committee has been focused on drafting rewritten statements of purpose on which the commission will frame our work. The committee is currently focusing its work on identifying essential functions of the three expressions of the church and hearing further information from synods about their functions.
• The members of the Dismantling Racism Committee are working through their other committee assignments to ensure that the work of the CRLC is continuing to be viewed through a lens of antiracism.
• The Communications Committee is working with the All Ears Committee concerning how listening activities will be hosted during the July Youth Gathering, the Young Adult Gathering, as well as at the MYLE and tAble gatherings. The Communications Committee will work with the ELCA Strategic Communications department to find the best way to inform gathering attendees about these activities.

Day 2

• The Planning and Report Committee has created templates for other committees and individual members of the CRLC to submit recommendations to the larger commission. These templates were reviewed and approved by the commission.
• The Who Are We Committee spoke with Related Institutions, Organizations, and Ministries (RIOMs) about their groups' needs. They also internally discussed the definition of a “member” of a congregation, how ministering is defined when done outside of congregations, and how we spread the word about who we are as members of the ELCA.
  • The Who Are We Committee is also in discussion about the current seal of the ELCA used on official documents.
• The How Are We Governed Committee is having internal discussions around synods, how they were formed, and what they could look like for the church in the future.
• The CRLC discussed priority themes for committees to review prior to the next meeting in August. Priority themes include discussing the name of the ELCA, finalizing ongoing listening activities, clarifying purpose statements, and reviewing the scope and function of synods.

La Asamblea de toda la Iglesia de la IELA 2022 acción en la Comisión para una Iglesia Luterana Renovada

Ordenar al Consejo de la Iglesia que establezca una Comisión para una Iglesia Luterana Renovada compuesta por líderes de diversa representación de las tres expresiones que, trabajando en consulta con la Conferencia de Obispos y el Consejo de la Iglesia, reconsidere las declaraciones de propósito para cada una de las expresiones de esta iglesia, los principios de su estructura organizativa y todos los asuntos concernientes a esto, prestando atención particular a nuestro compromiso compartido de desmantelar el racismo, y presente sus hallazgos y recomendaciones a la Asamblea de toda la Iglesia de 2025 en preparación para una posible convención de reconstitución que se convocará conforme a las reglas para llevar a cabo una reunión especial de la Asamblea de toda la Iglesia”. Sexta reunión de la Comisión para una Iglesia Luterana Renovada

La Comisión para una Iglesia Luterana Renovada (CRLC, por sus siglas en inglés) se reunió a través de Zoom el 11 y 12 de junio de 2024. Cada reunión comenzó con una conversación, oración y una santa reflexión sobre nuestro trabajo juntos.

Día 1

• El Comité “Todo oídos” presentó los aspectos más destacados de la encuesta inicial de las sesiones de escucha que se realizaron durante el invierno y la encuesta en línea de la CRLC. También entregaron una actualización de cómo acercarse a los grupos individuales de ministerios étnicos y escuchar lo que sucederá en la Asamblea Juvenil y los eventos adyacentes.
• El Comité “Qué y por qué” se ha concentrado en la redacción de declaraciones de propósito reescritas en las que la comisión estructurará su trabajo. Actualmente, el trabajo del comité se enfoca en identificar las funciones esenciales de las tres expresiones de la iglesia y en escuchar más información por parte de los sínodos sobre las funciones de estos.
• Los miembros del Comité para el Desmantelamiento del Racismo están trabajando a través de sus otras asignaciones para garantizar que el trabajo de la CRLC siga siendo visto a través de una lente de antirracismo.
• El Comité de “Comunicaciones” está trabajando con el Comité “Todo oídos” en cómo se organizarán las actividades de escucha durante la Asamblea Juvenil del mes de julio, la Asamblea de Jóvenes Adultos, lo mismo que en las reuniones de MYLE y tAble. El Comité de “Comunicaciones” trabajará con el departamento de Comunicaciones Estratégicas para encontrar la mejor manera de informar a los asistentes a las asambleas acerca de estas actividades.

Día 2

• El Comité “Planificación e informe” ha elaborado plantillas para que otros comités y miembros individuales de la CRLC le presenten recomendaciones al resto de la comisión. Estas plantillas fueron revisadas y aprobadas por la comisión.
• El Comité “Quiénes somos” habló con Related Institutions, Organizations, and Ministries (RIOM) [Instituciones, Organizaciones y Ministerios Relacionados] acerca de las necesidades de su grupo. También discutieron internamente la definición de “miembro” de una congregación, cómo se define el ministerio cuando se realiza fuera de las congregaciones, y cómo corremos la voz con respecto a quiénes somos como miembros de la ELCA (por sus siglas en inglés).
  • El Comité “Quiénes somos” también está llevando a cabo discusiones sobre el sello actual de la ELCA que se utiliza en los documentos oficiales.
• El Comité “Cómo nos gobernamos” está teniendo discusiones internas en torno a los sínodos, cómo se formaron estos, y cómo podrían ser para la iglesia en el futuro.
• La CRLC discutió sobre los temas prioritarios que los comités deben revisar antes de la próxima reunión en agosto. Los temas prioritarios incluyen la discusión del nombre de la ELCA, la finalización de las actividades de escucha en curso, el esclarecimiento de las declaraciones de propósito y la revisión del alcance y la función de los sínodos.
