Leadership Circle Frequently Asked Questions
The Leadership Circle is a group of faithful supporters of the ministries of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
As a member of the Leadership Circle, you have access to specialized information about the ministries you are passionate about. You will receive a newsletter twice a year with updates from the directors of Service and Justice, Christian Communities and Leadership, and “Where Needed Most.” You also have access to this website, where you can find resources, information about special events and more stories about the ministries you support.
Ask your financial institution to include your full name (including middle initial) and address with the gift.
If you would like to make a contribution to the ELCA’s general, undesignated fund, have your financial institution make the check payable to “Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.” If you would like your gift to go to a specific ELCA program, indicate the program name after “ELCA.” If you’re not sure of the program name, contact us at LeadershipCircle@ELCA.org.
Ask your financial institution to send the check to:

In most instances, yes! Many of the ELCA ministries you support offer assistance based on resources available and need, with no regard to religion, race or culture. Also, the ELCA does not accept any goods or services in return for contributions. So, even though the ELCA is a church, many of its ministries are not subject to the same restrictions as religious organizations. For a letter that outlines this for your company, contact matchinggifts@elca.org.
Less than 15% of most gifts goes toward fundraising and administration, and more than 85% goes toward program costs. Because of our long-standing partnerships across the United States and around the world, we are able to do excellent work with relatively low administrative costs. Gifts that are given to a specific disaster through Lutheran Disaster Response — like tornadoes, hurricane response and wildfires — are used 100% toward our response to that disaster.
Becoming a Monthly Partner is a convenient, simple way to make a big impact on the mission and ministry of our church. Your gift of at least $10 per program will be automatically charged to your credit card or bank account on the 15th of every month. An annual, consolidated receipt will be mailed to your home in the first quarter (January-March) of every year. You can cancel, change or update your automatic monthly donation at any time by calling 800-638-3522. A monthly gift of $83.34 or more qualifies you for the Leadership Circle!

Charitable gifts of appreciated stocks, bonds or mutual funds held for more than one year can provide special tax advantages. The person making the gift (the “donor”) can claim a charitable tax deduction for the full fair market value of the securities donated to the ELCA and will never have to pay capital gains taxes on the appreciation. Securities held less than one year may also be donated but the deduction is limited to the lesser of cost basis or market value.
How to transfer securities to The ELCA – you or your broker should contact the ELCA Foundation at 800-638-3522 ext. 2976 or elcafoundation@elca.org for security transfer instructions and brokerage account information. You should notify the ELCA Foundation when donating securities for a specific program or purpose.
Deduction – For gifts of publicly traded securities, the deduction is determined by taking the average, or mean, between the high and low trading prices of the security on the date of the gift (or the nearest trading date(s)).
Other securities – Closely held stock, Subchapter S corporate stock, limited liability company interests and partnerships can sometimes be used to make a charitable gift. Any proposed gift of such assets should be reviewed with The ELCA Foundation and the donor’s tax advisors in advance. An S corporation, limited liability company or partnership may also donate specific assets and the deduction will be divided among the shareholders or members.
Any gift may be designated in memory or honor of a friend, family member or other person.
You can make checks payable to your congregation, write your designation (e.g. “ELCA World Hunger”) in the memo line, and place your gift in the offering plate. You can also make gifts directly to ELCA ministries or to Where Needed Most at ELCA.org/Give.
