Bishops at the Gathering

A Bishop's Role at the Gathering

Thank you so much for making sure the Gathering is on your timeline and making it a priority. Here are a few key things we would like you to do with your time at the Gathering:

  • Be present.
  • Engage.
  • Preach and preside at your synod's Synod Day.
  • Go out into Minneapolis with your synod on Service Learning Day.
  • Participate in Interactive Learning.
  • Attend the opening dinner Sunday for the bishops’ orientation.
  • SYMBOL dinner on Monday night.

Your Gathering Contact

Rachel Alley (Program Manager, ELCA Youth Ministries) will be your contact for all things Gathering related. Rachel will be shepherding your getting ready, transportation and hotel needs. Rachel will be working alongside the Operations Team to ensure your stay in Minneapolis has maximum youth time. She can be reached by email (Rachel.Alley@elca.org).

Gathering Overview

Every three years, 30,000 high school youth and their adult leaders from across the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America gather for a week of faith formation known as the ELCA Youth Gathering. Through days spent in interactive learning, worship, Bible study, service and fellowship, young people grow in faith and are challenged and inspired to live their faith in their daily lives.

An important part of the Gathering's ministry are the two pre-events, the Multicultural Youth Leadership Event (MYLE), a faith formation and leadership development event primarily for youth of color, and the tAble, a gathering that gathers, blesses and empowers youth with disabilities. During these pre-events, Bishops will stay at their Gathering housing location. Transportation to/from pre-events will be the responsibility of the bishop (public transportation, Uber/Lyft, etc).

Registration

Click here to start your registration or log into your account. Please refer to previous communications for the registration code. If you need assistance, please contact either Rachel Alley or the Gathering office (gathering@elca.org).

As we progress in our planning, our programs will take shape and we will have more information about your registration process. We will make sure you are kept informed! If your administrative assistant, or executive assistant should receive information to assist in your travel plans, we will have a link set up to invite them to the distribution list. If you cannot attend the Gathering, please consider sending a stand-in to preach and preside for your synod day. We strongly encourage you to be present at the 2022 Gathering for the young people of your synod.

As far as your expenses go, the Gathering will cover the following:

  • Gathering registration for you and your spouse.
  • Housing Sunday-Wednesday night (Check out on Thursday)
  • Sunday Dinner
  • Monday dinner with SYMBOL (Synod Youth Ministry Band Of Leaders)
  • Transportation to/from scheduled events with Gathering participants
  • Tentative- Transportation to/from the airport

The Gathering will not cover travel to and from the Gathering, and meals other than Sunday and Monday dinner. We encourage you to connect with congregations in your synod and see if they’d like to dine with you for any meals. This would be an excellent opportunity to talk with the young people of your synod, hear their thoughts and experience so far.

Synod Contacts

One of the best resources for your synod during the months spent planning for the Gathering is your Gathering Synod Coordinator. They are field workers for the Gathering and will be the first to have the answers to your questions for your synod’s congregations. To see their job description, click here. If you do not know your Gathering Synod Coordinator, contact the Gathering office.

FAQ

What is the theme? And what is the theme scripture?

The theme for the 2022 ELCA Youth Gathering is "boundless: God beyond measure" and the theme verse is Ephesians 3:14-21. To learn more about the theme and the daily themes, visit: https://elca.org/YouthGathering/About/Theme.

On which day is my synod's Synod Day?

A schedule will be posted a few months before the event.

Where will my Synod Day be located?

This will become final several months before the event. Connect with your Synod Day Director after their November training for a tentative location. Something new and exciting for the 2022 Gathering cycle is that we will be hosted by local congregations in the Minneapolis area for Synod Day.

What is a Synod Day Director?

Each synod has identified a Synod Day Director to coordinate the "Synod Day" of the Gathering. Their job description is included here for your information. If you don't know your Synod Day Director, contact the Gathering office.

Do I book my own hotel?

No, the Gathering will provide the hotel based on your registration arrival/departure information that you will provide when you register. Additional nights beyond the four covered by the Gathering will be your responsibility.

Do I book my own flight?

Yes. You will be asked to provide your flight information for pickup by our transportation team at the airport. The Gathering does not cover transportation to/from Minneapolis. If you book with Concur, please do NOT choose the Gathering as the cost center. This is the responsibility of your synod.
