2018 Indonesia Tsunami Response

The situation:
Thousands of our neighbors in Indonesia continue to deal with the devastating destruction caused by a series of tsunamis and earthquakes in 2018.

The most recent disaster occurred Dec. 22, when a tsunami struck the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra. So far, 430 people have died, 1,500 were injured and approximately 2,000 homes were destroyed. The tsunami was triggered by the eruption of the Mount Anak Krakatau volcano, and there are concerns that continuing volcanic activity could trigger additional mudslides and tsunamis in the coming days.

This past September, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami hit parts of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, claiming more than 1,900 lives and displacing thousands of others. And in August, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the northern shore of Lombok, where more than 90 percent of buildings were rendered uninhabitable.

Our response:
After the Java and Sumatra tsunami, Lutheran Disaster Response supported our partner – Huria Kristen Batak Protestan (Batak Christian Protestant Church, or HKBP) as they provided immediate relief by sending a medical team to set up a health post in a temporary shelter to conduct wellness care for affected families.

In response to the Sulawesi disaster, HKBP provided immediate needs including food and medical care. Lutheran Disaster Response has also supported survivors of the Lombok earthquake through the ACT Alliance to restore healthcare systems, provide psychosocial care and support, and provide training on disaster preparedness.

Lutheran Disaster Response stands ready to accompany communities with additional support as relief and recovery efforts continue.
