The ELCA’s social statement on “Abortion” expresses our church’s teaching on matters related to induced abortion. The statement is grounded in the conviction that Christians are united in Christ through faith “with both the freedom and obligation to engage in serious moral deliberation.” It presents our basic faith convictions that form the foundation for our perspective on abortion and the commitments of this church as a faith community supportive of life. The social statement also provides guidance for making decisions regarding unintended pregnancies and for reflecting on and discussing public policy issues related to abortion.

You can read or download the full social statement on “Abortion” in English or en español. This statement was adopted in 1991 by the ELCA Churchwide Assembly.
