Samuel Zeiser re-elected bishop of ELCA Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod


The Rev. Samuel R. Zeiser was re-elected May 30 to serve a second six-year term as bishop of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) during the Synod Assembly May 30-31 at Split Rock Resort in Lake Harmony, Pa.

Zeiser was re-elected with 436 votes of the 505 legal votes cast (379 were needed for re-election). The Rev. Mary W. Gade, associate of the bishop for the ELCA Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod based in Allentown, Pa, received seven votes.

Prior to becoming bishop in 2008, Zeiser graduated from Albright College in Reading, Pa. He earned Master of Divinity and Master of Sacred Theology degrees from the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia and a doctor of philosophy degree from Drew University in Madison, N.J. The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia is one of eight ELCA seminaries. Zeiser was pastor of St. John Lutheran Church in Nanticoke, Pa., Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Bangor, Pa., Bethany Lutheran Church in West Reading, Pa., and Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Allentown, Pa.
